Is this breaking news? Hardly. Worth a second look? Absolutely. Anyone who has eaten a school lunch in the past fifteen years knows that our public school lunch system is in crisis. A sample lunch menu of the public school district that I live in boasts popcorn chicken bites, cheeseburgers & stuffed crust pizza. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are an option every single day.

The Institute of Medicine released a report today urging an update to the 14-year old cafeteria standards. The dated guidelines don’t even match up with the government’s own dietary guidelines, which advocates more fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
